Byakhee

Bat-like horrors from the void that serve as Nyarlathotep's winged steeds across the stars.

The Byakhee, often called 'Flying Polyps' or 'Ghouls of the Sky', are a terrifying race of bat-like entities that serve as the primary aerial mounts and messengers for Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos. Unlike many other Outer Gods who remain distant and abstract, the Byakhee actively traverse the cosmos, carrying their masters across vast distances to Earth and beyond. They are depicted as having leathery wings, a grotesque resemblance to earth-bats but on a monstrous scale, with eyes that reflect a cold, alien intelligence.

Lore & Background

The Byakhee possess a terrifying connection to the dream world and the fabric of reality itself. They are capable of carrying human souls or bodies through the cosmos, sometimes acting as intermediaries between dimensions. In certain tales, they are associated with ancient witch cults on Earth that sought to summon them for forbidden knowledge or transportation. Their presence is often heralded by a chilling silence in the air and a sense of dread, as their leathery wings blot out the stars. They represent the invasive nature of the Outer Gods, bringing cosmic horror directly into the mundane world.

In Their Own Story

The wind died instantly, leaving the graveyard air thick and suffocating. Elias looked up, his breath catching in his throat as the moonlight was suddenly eclipsed not by clouds, but by a swarm of leathery shapes. They descended with a sound like tearing silk, their wings vast and dark against the pale light. At their center rode a figure of shifting shadows, laughing with a voice that seemed to vibrate within Elias's own skull. The Byakhee circled lower, their cold, alien eyes locking onto him, not as a predator sees prey, but as a courier recognizes a package to be delivered to the void.

Reader's Guide

The Byakhee function less as an independent faction and more as a specialized division of Nyarlathotep's forces. They are the logistical backbone for the Crawling Chaos's terrestrial operations, providing rapid transit across impossible distances. Their goals are entirely subservient to their master: to transport him, his agents, and sometimes captured souls between worlds. They do not have independent ambitions but execute commands with cold efficiency, often appearing during rituals or summonings intended by cultists who mistakenly believe they can control them. Members of this group are uniform in appearance and purpose, lacking individual names or distinct personalities in the traditional sense. Their role in the cosmic conflict is that of enablers; without them, Nyarlathotep's direct interference on Earth would be significantly slower and more difficult to orchestrate.
