Lore & Background
Lavinia Whateley was born around 1878 to Old Whateley and a mother who met an "unexplained death by violence" when Lavinia was 12. She never married, remaining a spinster in her father's decrepit farmhouse in Dunwich, Massachusetts. She is described as "a somewhat deformed, unattractive albino woman" who spent her time in thunder storms and studying her father's occult tomes. In 1913, she gave birth to Wilbur Whateley, a "dark, goatish-looking infant" whom neighbors called "Lavinny's black brat". The father was unknown at the time, but later revealed to be the entity Yog-Sothoth. On Halloween night in 1926, Lavinia disappeared under mysterious circumstances, presumably killed or sacrificed by her son Wilbur.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the cracked timbers of the old farmhouse, carrying the scent of wet earth and decay. Lavinia stood in the corner of the cellar, her pale face illuminated only by the flickering tallow candles. She watched as her brother chanted words that should not exist on human tongues, the air growing thick with pressure. Outside, the hill seemed to breathe, waiting for the door to open. There was no fear in her eyes, only a hollow resignation, knowing the price of their blood would be paid before dawn.
Reader's Guide
Lavinia Whateley serves as a tragic supporting character who highlights the generational curse afflicting her family. Her role is primarily reactive; she follows the path laid out by her father and brother without significant independent agency. She possesses no magical abilities of her own but benefits from the family's access to forbidden lore, such as the Necronomicon. Her defining moment occurs during the final confrontation at the Whateley farm. Her arc concludes with the destruction of the homestead, symbolizing the end of the immediate threat posed by the Whateleys in that generation.
